Traditional wagon painting course.

Uncategorized

I recently went on a fabulous 3 day traditional wagon painting course. Working with traditional scroll work seen on many Gypsy wagons. Taught by the wonderfully talented Sarah Harvey Who’s excellent teaching skills helped us along the way. First of all we learnt the use of the brush’s often used in this traditional skill set on glossy paper. Naturel hair chisel brushes, as well as lining in brushes, learning how to hold them and move them in particular ways to aid getting nice, flic’s, corners and points. It’s takes a steady hand to begin with!

We then took what we had learnt and transferred these skills into designing a piece for what we had brought in with us, I had brought in an old rusty saw that I had prepped in ready for the day. Creating lovely scroll work to fit the blade, once the design was down, I then set to work on painting it all up. I went maximalist in order to learn the most I possibly could from this fantastic 3 day course. Do get in touch with Sarah if your interested in learning as I believe she also does sign writing and roses and castles courses as well.

Stained glass commission, silver birch forest.

Uncategorized

I’ve got a stained glass commission on at the moment, which is sooo exiting! This is a multi layered “peekaboo lightbox” as I like to call them. Inspired by the Victorian puppet theatres, these creations are made up of lots of layers sitting behind each other, creating a scene for the imagination.

Using, my favourite… tons of techniques!! This particular box has been commissioned by my customer to depict the local countryside around them for their grade 2 listed home and old barns.

Here is the back panel, a silver birch forest, which im super pleased with.

Another succsessful stained glass course for beginners

Uncategorized

We had another wonderfully successful stained glass course for beginners, working in Tiffany style copper foiling yesterday. 4 really fun students completed 4 completely individual and unique projects. A packed day of learning how to design a project, cut glass to a pattern, copper foil each piece of glass, solder them all together and add some patina for that extra little touch. They all worked so hard on this intense day of learning skills of old, sharing laughs, working through it, and all collectivly panicking when it came to soldering (Quite a funny moment!) But they all got stuck right in, figured it out and really pulled it out the bag. Well done team glass!

I have more various courses coming up, held on the last Saturday of most months. Please do contact me for more details if you fancy giving it a go. Or, think it would make a fantastic Christmas present for someone you love. All set on my off grid studio and home at Oak Meadow in the rolling hills of Devon

Upcoming Stained Glass Courses in Devon

Uncategorized

Upcoming stained glass courses in Devon, with spots still available. Why not treat yourself to some creative fun as the nights draw in and the seasons change. I’ve got a few options over the next few months.

25th October – Traditional leaded lights – You can design and make your own stained glass panel roughly A4 in size. Learn how to create a workable design, cut the glass to a pattern, then lead and solder your panel. Creating your own beautiful work of art.

29th November – Kiln fired painting on glass – Learn the basics of how craftspeople have been adding painted detailing onto glass for century’s. By applying tracing lines (your main outlines) these then get fired at lunch time. Then in the afternoon add depth and texture with some shading to create wonderful artistic panes of glass. These will then be fired at the end of the day.

31st January- Copper foiling, Tiffany style – Think Tiffany lamps, but much simpler! This is a way of working with small bit of glass where instead of leading, you wrap copper tape around each piece then run solder along each join. This technique allows you to create not only 2D patterns, but 3D pieces as well. Lots of fun!

Geometric Stained Glass Restoration

Uncategorized

Work is nearly complete on this amazing geometric stained glass restoration. These have been quite a difficult restoration. They look geometric, but actually, non of the clear octagons are the same length on ANY side, and most of the blue cuts are different length’s!! Which really throws you when putting them back together. We think they were done by an apprentice, on a Friday (Clearly they took a LOT longer than a Friday to put together!) and he had a lovely wench down at the local ale house that he was keen to go and visit! Jokes, not jokes!

But non the less, put them together we have. And they really are a wonderful triptych set of stained glass panels. Looking forward to going to do the refit with Jason Clarkeson who’s been working alongside me on this project. These windows are from Al Farid restaurant, serving very tasty Moroccan food for 20 years now in the historic 3 Gables buildings situated directly next to Exeter Cathedral. Geometric stained glass restoration ready to go back in!

Do you have any Stained glass in need of care and attention? It could be a private residence or a business premises Contact me to find out how I can help you.
