I’ve been doing a lot of stained glass repair and restoration lately. The south coast of Devon was a very popular tourist destination in the Victorian era, and as stained glass was very popular in the early 1900’s a lot of the historic public buildings and residential propertys have them installed. A lot still exists, however a lot of it is in some serious need of some TLC. from a small insitu crack in a pane of glass up to, windows falling out of their frames, especiialy front door panels that constantyly get opend shut with lots of banging. Especially the ones with teenagers in the house!
It is my pleasure as a small one woman business to work these old panels, helping continue their lifespan for another few hundred years. and be enjoyed as hand crafted works of art that transmit colour and light into our homes and workspaces. Sadly a lot of homes, removed the ‘outdated and energy inefficiant’ pieces of history. Which from a Master Craftsmans artistic point of view, is areal shame. Thankfully I believe there is a revival to keep these beautiful old crafts kept within the buildings these days. There are some real hidden gems amongst us, people pulling up decades old lino to find stunning parquet flooring, georgous hand crafted tiles, old firplaces, carved wooden panels. If we dont kep these things alive as well as teach our next generations the skills, knowledge and patience to create this unique expertese, then they will be lost forever, and that, would be a real shame.
If you have some stained glass in need of looking at, for small jobs through to full restoration, please do Get in touch to have a chat about what can be done.
